Dr. John B. Waits, MD, FAAFP is a practicing, board-certified Family Medicine and Obstetrics physician who serves as CEO of Cahaba Medical Care and the Program Director and DIO of the Cahaba Family Medicine Residency.
Dr. John B. Waits attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine (Tuscaloosa Campus for clinical years) and completed his Family Medicine Residency at In His IMAGE Family Medicine Residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma and an Obstetrics Fellowship at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa.
Dr. Waits founded Cahaba Medical Care in 2004. In 2008, Dr. Waits applied for and was granted Rural Health Clinic status for Cahaba Medical Care.
From 2006-2011, Dr. Waits served as the Residency Director at the University of Alabama’s Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency (TFMR). During this time, he also served as an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine and in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the College of Community Health Sciences at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Tuscaloosa. During his tenure as Program Director at TFMR, Dr. Waits started a rural residency training track in Centreville, Alabama
In 2010, Dr. Waits founded the Cahaba Medical Care Foundation with his practice partner, Dr. Lacy Smith, transitioning their private practice into a 501c3 non-profit. Dr. Waits and Dr. Smith worked together to apply for Community Health Center (FQHC) designation, which they were awarded in 2012.
In 2013, Dr. Waits and Dr. Smith also founded and received accreditation for the Cahaba Family Medicine Residency in Centreville, Alabama, an ACGME and AOA accredited Family Medicine Residency and Teaching Health Center.
Cahaba Medical Care currently has 6 Medical office locations in Central Alabama, 1 Dental office location, and 1 community center, employing 185 employees, including 14 physicians, 17 Residents, and 14 advance practice providers.
Dr. Waits has a particular interest in health care policy and how it touches women and children in terms of maternity and infant care, the rural poor, health care access, and the care of the uninsured and underinsured, and, among other positions, serves on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Partnership for Children and the Alabama Primary Health Care Association.
