Alexis T. Mason, MD

Recipient of the 2018 Young Alumni Award

Published Wednesday, March 21, 2018 8:00 am

Alexis T. Mason, MD is a native of Town Creek, Alabama. She counts it a blessing to be the third of four children, born to Patrick and Myra Mason.  A lawn mower accident at the age of three that almost took her limb and life sealed her fate to join the community of medical professionals that are providing health care to rural America.

She started her higher education journey becoming a graduate of the class of 2006 from Alabama A&M University. She then went on to the Rural Medical Scholars Program at the University of Alabama where she received her Masters in Human and Environmental Science in 2008, which propelled her into the University of Alabama School of Medicine where she received her medical degree in 2012.

Following this term, she attended the University of Tennessee Family Medicine program in Jackson, TN. for residency, which she completed in 2015. She then completed a fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at the University of Alabama.

She is now practicing in Gordo, AL with Whatley Health Services as well as assisting with the SMART Clinic in Aliceville, AL. Her interests include but are not limited to: psychiatric integration into primary care and rural medicine.  She loves the Lord, her family, and her career. She has always enjoyed helping others and feels that she is currently on the right path to continue this endeavor, by merging faith and medicine as a vehicle of the Lord for healing the body, mind, and soul.

After only two years in rural practice, she has become a favored preceptor for students entering the rural medicine pipeline and active in the AAFP. Her mentor Dr. John Brandon states, “She is fantastic. Having been a mentor for nearly a decade, it is now a pleasure to call her my doctor. Her warm smile is always present. Her compassion always evident. I commend the committee on selecting a very deserving candidate for this praise and honor.”

Dr. Mason was nominated for this award by Dr. John R. Wheat.
